Thomas Edison was asked by a reporter from a science journal to comment on the possibility of using his inventions to communicate with spirits. He replied that if the spirits were only capable of subtle influences, a sensitive recording device would provide a better chance of spirit communication than the table tipping and ouija boards mediums employed at the time. As sound recording became widespread, mediums explored using this technology to demonstrate communication with the dead.  Attempts to use portable recording devices and modern digital technologies to communicate with spirits have continued to the present day.

EVP (electronic voice phenomena) are usually collected by a researcher asking questions or making statements to which one or many spirits respond. During the collection process, a device such as a hand held digital recorder records all sounds, ambient noise as well as the researcher's questions and comments, to be analyzed after the investigation.  Audio software for EVP is used to amplify the recording and to isolate any electronic voice phenomena, generally short sentences or isolated phrases, and to clarify the recording of any ghost voices so they may be heard more clearly.

The lyrics to "Orchid" are compiled, with minimal editing, from transcriptions of purported EVP recordings conducted at various locations: A private house, an apartment building, a hotel, a cemetery and, intriguingly,  Little Big Horn National Park.

The James Randi Educational Foundation offers a million dollars for proof that any phenomena, including EVP, are of paranormal origin.
